More newspapers announced moves to shutter printing operations and shift print production. Dow Jones & Co. will shut down its Denver printing plant and outsource the Colorado production of The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s to the Denver Newspaper Agency—publisher of the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post. Newspapers & Technology reported the DNA printing plant will begin producing WSJ and Barron’s for regional circulation by Aug. 1.The DNA recently spent millions upgrading the plant. (e-GAM 10/5/05)
The Modesto (CA) Bee will move its printing to sister paper The Sacramento Bee, 75 miles north, eliminating 80 full-time jobs, by the end of September. Modesto's circulation is 83,878 weekdays and 88,380 on Sundays. There will be a press in Sacramento dedicated to printing the Bee.
The Bees' parent, The McClatchy Co., announced 10% staffing reductions last month, the first mass layoff in the company's history. . McClatchy also recently announced that it was outsourcing printing operations of two of its papers, the Idaho Statesman and Bellingham (Wash.) Herald. (e-GAM 6/16/08)
Printing of The (Henderson, KY) Gleaner newspapers will move to the Evansville (IN) Courier & Press. Both newspapers are owned by the Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co., which earlier this month spun off its fast-growing cable television networks and Web sites into a separate company, Scripps Networks Interactive.
